27 Juli 2015 | Canada, Mount Robson

The past 1,5 month have been crazy. And this time, I mean crazy in a good way. :)

The 16th of June Charlotte arrived from the Netherlands. Yay! Before we went on a roadtrip we had some time in Vancouver. It was fun to finally act like a tourist in the town your living in and we spend time walking through Yaletown, with is lovely harbour, China Town with all the crazy herbs and Gastown, with its old buildings. The next day, we spreaded our culture by going by bike to Granville Island and Stanley Park and went for a real North American dinner at Whitespot, were Tonje and Charlotte had a lot of fun with their milkshakes (still kinda hate you girls for that haha!;)). The 19th of June was packing day, we spend hours doing groceries, packing and planning our trip. At night, I organized a goodbye party, everyone brought lovely food, it was weird saying goodbye to all the lovely girls.

Saturday was the day we started our roadtrip! Armed with our Cowboy hats and 5 hours of Spotify music we drove away in our Chevrolet Sonic (also known as Luisa), a brand new car which even had a wifi hot spot! The first day, we visitited the Coquilla Tunnels in Hope. Other stops (Yala and Hells Gate) not that interesting, maybe also because of all the clowds that formed a gigantic rain episode above our heads. Luckily, it was dry when we arrived in Paul Lake (Kamploops), an area which is known for its hilly and dry landschape.

Charlotte and I decided this was the start of our journey to become real males. Our first step was making fire and opening a can without an opener using an axe. Next, we learned how to deal with dirty toilets and extreme cold at night. On day 3 we experienced how to survive without a shower for a long time and not wine about it, and on day 4 we learned how to become real “bikkels” by taking cold showers and washed our hair. We can also navigate without a tomtom and don’t wear makup when we go hiking. Also, deodorant is overrated as it attracts bears. We also know how to drive in other gears besides manual and know how to get gas at a pump station. We can also cut wood in the forest with an axe and are really into drinking beers. We also just change clothing next to our car without making a deal of it and can hold our pie for longer than 1 hour. We also don’t shave anymore and cut our hair really short. That last thing was a joke, don’t worry.

We did a really hot hike in Paul Lake which was a nice warm-up for all the other hikes we would do this trip. We relaxed at the lake and some peeps offered us their kayaks so we went for a small trip. We had a lot of fun cooking dinner, drinking wine and eating mars mellows.

Our next stop was Clearwater/Wells Grey National Park. There were so many amazing waterfalls up there! You could also walk behind one of the waterfalls and we got completely wet from that. There was one waterfall which was almost as big as the Nicaragua Falls. Another one was 150m high and landed on an old volcano. At night, we got a bit crazy from all the mosquitoes but had fun talking and drinking with the employees. The next day, after a relaxing cup of coffee, we rented a kano and spend a few hours on the water. However, at some point, the air turned really dark and we got a bit scared for a thunderstorm. As a real army boat, Charlotte and I kanoed as fast as we could back to the dock, to only escape 3 drops of rain (haha sunglasses really make the world look darker). We spend the whole night baking potatoes in aluminimum foil on the campfire and by the time they were done the wine was also done.

Our journey continued to Mount Robson. After a stop at Dutch Lake, and a nice sushi lunch we prepared our next day. We were going to do a two day hike and as Charlotte and I are really experienced hikers, and have a lot of experience with these kind of things, we had to arrange all our gear such that it was as light and efficiently packed as possible.
We woke up quit early and started our journey up to mount Robson. Our backpacks were quite heavy (12kg), mainly due to the water we had to bring for 2 days and all the food (we literlerly had 2kg of couscous salad with us haha). The Berg-Lake Trail was very impressive, the hike started with some asur blue lakes and went up to a campground in the middle of the mountains. We were happy that we could leave our stuff after 11km of heavy hiking and continued our hike uphill towards the glaciers. We saw so many nice waterfalls and walked through an impressive landscape with a lot of fallen rocks. Most amazing was the glacier and the volcano rocks you had to walk on before seeing the glacier. Mainly because of the weater circumstances and the lack of other people, we felt really special being at that place.
At night we had a lot of fun looking at other hikers and their habits. Basically everyone except us was eating from bags, instant meals with only needed water. We, however, brought hamburgers, nuts, couscous, noodles and carrots and really made the most of our meal. We went to bed quit early, tired of the day. After 10hrs of sleep, the hike on the way back was peanuts. As horrible as we are, the next day, we rewarded ourselves with cookies, nice lunch and timtams. :)

We drove to Jasper, and we were surprised by all the tourism (eventough it was nice to be finally around other people again). We were standing on a really, really big campground, on the edge of the park. However, as we could not see any other people from our camping spot, and there was an increased risk of encountering bears (even grizzlies) in this area, we tried to avoid our camping spot the best we could. The first day, we went to Edith Lake and Anneth Lake and relaxed at the water. When the sun was on its way down (it was really hot ~ 32 degrees), we went to Maligne Canyon, a rock that was split for 1000 of years by river water. In the evening, Charlotte and I turned into females again. After a shower session, makeup and trying 10 different outfits we went to Japser in which we flaneerden on the streets. We went for dinner and met some Canadians in a bar. We had fun dancing and drinking.
The next day, we did a hike to Old Fort Point, which had a nice viewpoint. We went to Pyramid Lake were we went swimming in the water (fish!). in the evening we went to Mount Whistlers, where we climed 1080m to the top in 1,5hours. On the top was a really nice view over the Rocky Mountains and we really enjoyed ourselves making pretty pictures. At night, we choose to have dinner at a lake and made some really nice wraps. We had fun having small fished bite our feet.
The day after we went to Miette Hot Springs, the hot springs more looked like a warm swimming pool, but was still really enjoyable. We did a small hike but turned around when we saw bearpoop. We had a lovely dinner and went into the hot springs again at night. During our way back, Charlotte screamed: Miriam! Beer! Beer! And guess what, there was a bear on the road! We didn’t know what to do so decided in all our excitement to just continue our drive. We were so happy we had this experience, and were also happy we did not see them before (they were bigger than we expected!).

The day after we did one of the most amazing drives existing on earth; the glacier icefield parkway. After a stop at Tim Hortons which made our belly hurt the rest of the day, we hit the road around 11. The road started with the hilly and lakey landscape around Japer, but after 50km, the mountains became higher and wilder; the real rockies! Most tops were covered with snow. We had to laugh really hard about all the tourism at the visitor center. Omg, so many people who just behave like sheep! We decided to do hike which would lead us to a nice viewpoint on the Atabrashka Glacier. What an amazing hike was this! There was snow, rocks, ice, lakes, impressive views on the mountains and glacier, and we even saw a mountain goat! We had dinner at an amazing place called Bow Lake. One of our favourite viewpoints on the way looked all over the rockies and its blue lakes. In the evening, we stopped at Lake Louise, which is beautifull but a bit overrated by all the tourism. More impressive was Maligne Lake, far less known, with its insane blue water and pyramid shaped rocks behind it. We arrived late at night in Banff but were happy with our reservation on the campground. At night, we were woken up by an extreme thunderstorm, which sounded even more extreme with the echoing of the mountains.

Then it was Canada Day! After a hike to Castle Mountain, we went to the city for the parade. What a happy atmosphere was there in the city! At night, there was music in the park. We were happy with all the free beers given to us and danced the night away in a famous club.
After a slower morning than we were used to, we drove to Calgary. After leaving the rockies, the landscape changed to a hillier and more green landscape. We could sleep at the house of Mechteld, a friend of the father of Charlotte. We took her for dinner at OJs, which had some really nice food.

And then it was finally Stampede Day! We woke up early and dressed in our best cowboy outfits to see the parade. There were about 150 cars, with music, traditional chloting or companies doing something crazy. Everyone was very proud of their country. We eat some falafel and started drinking beers (secretly as Canada doesn’t like people drinking in public). We went to the Calgery Stampede, a big area which is similar to a big funfair. There were stands with food and they sold basically everyting fried. OMG! At 1 we had tickets for the Rodeo, we were really happy with our spots in the shade. We were really impressed by all the cowboys doing their trics, there were different shows, they either had to ride a wild horse, wild bull or try to catch a young one using a lasso. There was a lot of excitement and crazyness. We walked around and found a big tent with beers and music. After a visit to downtown we went to Cowboys, a big tent filled with people dressed in cowboy clothing. We had so much fun that night, I will save you the details.

The next day, after a nice warm shower, we drove back to Lake Louise were we picked up Camille, my old Belgian roommate. We found a nice camping spot and had dinner.

In the morning, we wanted to do a hike, but after driving for 45km on an unpaved road, we decided that our car really wasnta four wheel drive and turned around. We had a nice lunch and went for icecream. After that we went to some natural hot springs were we had fun talking with people. We had dinner at a lake and spend the night playing kingscup (charlotte drinks, omg I love marsmellows lick my stick).
We wanted to do a hike but because there was a grizzly bear on the trail, we could not do the hike, therefore we did another one which had some nice viewpoints to the wedlands, the rockies and the parcel mountains. Another hike brought us up to the hoodoos, some clay sendiments. We drove to invermere and swam in the lake. At night, there was an outdoor movie play in Invermere and we watched the movie Goonies.

We had a long day of driving all the way to Nelson. We stopped at some nice spots during the way and had fun at the ferry. In Nelson, we had a campground downtown which was nice as it allowed us to go to the city without a car. We spend some time at the beach and got ready for dinner. We decided to go to a tapas restaurant. What a joke was this! The food was way overpriced. For 6 dollars, you could get 2 slices of onion, pepper and mushrooms on a stick, and for 12, 2 small bites of meat. We were still hungry after and went for pizza.

The next day, we woke up early. We had a long drive and stopped at some viewpoints. Driving into Vancouver, you could hardly see the sun because of all the cloudes from the smoke. We slept at my house for one night which was weird cause it felt like going back, eventough we still had 5 days ahead of us.

The trip conitnuend, we had an early ferry to Vancouver Island. We drove to Campbell River into Strathcona provincial Park, and were happy to sleep in a provincial park again. We were badly informed but could still do a nice hike up to some nice waterfalls. The nature was different from what we experienced before. The next day, we did a really nice hike for almost 8 hours. In the beginning there was a lot of fog, but after a nap in the middle of nowhere, the sky was clear and we could enjoy some really nice viewpoints on the way back. The day after started with rain, Charlotte and I decided to continue our journey of becoming males by trying fishing. We had to get a licence and after some people explaining us the ins and outs of fishing, we spend an hour trying to catch dinner. However, the only thing we were able to catch was seaweed and so we had to go to the supermarket. We had a nice girls evening, picnicking in the tent and reading girls magazines. The day after was still a bit rainy but we went out and saw some nice waterfalls. We drove all the way to Tofino (which wasn’t that bad because it was still raining). We had a really expensive campground which even had a swimming pool and Jacuzzi. In the evening, we went for a walk on the beach.

The next day, after some nice hikes in the Pacific Rim National Park, Charlotte and I rented surfboards. It was a really cool to have the boards on top of the car. We went into the ocean and the waves were really good! It was so much fun trying to stand and falling in the water. However, after a break we went into the water again and the water was way rougher than before. And than one of the scariest things Ive ever seen happened. Charlotte was screaming, when she showed her finger, the top was pointing in a different direction, it was for sure broken. We tried to go out of the water as fast as possible and tried to get help. People called an ambulance and she could be taken to the hospital. There, still in our wetsuits, an xray showed it was broken. We had to go to the hospital in Nanaimo to get it fixed, a 3hour drive from here. Charlotte did really well (maybe because of all the painkillers) and we arrived in Nanaimo around 1am. The next day we had to be in the hospital at 8 and at 9:30 Charlotte had the surgery. At 3 everything was done and Charlottes finger was standing straight again, she got a really nice brace for extra protection. We took the ferry back to Vancouver.

The next day we relaxed a bit before going to the festival the next day.

On Thursday we met Martine and rented a car at a really shady carplace. We drove to Pemberton and were really happy with Charlottes broken finger; it allowed us to sleep in the accessible campground, were you had free showers, could park your car and had the possibility to walk in and out of the festival whenever you wanted! Perfect! The festival was so well organized, only downside was that you had to stand behind a fence to drink alcohol (haha so Canadian), there were a lot of food options, a waterslide, free water and 4 stages, all with different styles of music. We saws so many artists live, including Kendrick Lamar, the Black Keys, Tiesto, Missy Eliot, Weezer, Chromeo, Skrilexx, Diplo, July Talk, Banks, Tycho, Portugal the Man, Chvhes, chet faker, RL grime, flux pavilion and many more. The weather was perfect (maybe a bit too warm), but we were happy to be able to go to a lake and chill during the day. We had so much fun!

On Monday we went back and spend the day shopping, at evening we met Anneke and Freek and went for dinner at the Boathouse.

On Tuesday, Charlotte had to catch her plane. It was weird saying goodbye after so many amazing days of fun and we both had to cry a little bit.

Now, I only have two weeks left here before going home. The weather is still good and I spend most of my time working on my project. Alan told me that I could write a paper so I am working hard to get that done before I leave.

See you soon bitches!
