January: Hangover Hikes fun, and matlab-stress

Time flies when you're having fun!
The chaos of the first weeks is slowly disappearing. The hazzles of finding the location of the lab and the never ending screenshot taking of busroutes have changed to efficient walks on campus and knowing the busstops to the closest supermarket by heart.

This means I have more time to stress about real stuff (like the police entering my room or the deadlines I have to meet for my internship). This is however, all relative stress, as the rest of the time is filled with day trips to Lynn Canyon or the Aquarium, partys on campus or the Biminis or small holidays on islands close to Vancouver.

Last Friday I experienced my first IceHockey Game. OMG what an excitement. I first was impressed by their skating skills, then by there hockey skills and then by their testosteron levels. Every round at least 2 players bumped into each other, ending in either a fall or in agression. Luckily the 3 refs could always keep the players apart, preventing them from real injury.

On Saturday, we went with a big group to the Vancouver Aquarium. We saw so many cute fish, jellyfish and sharks. The 4D film and the dolphin show were cool and we could easily have spent more time there. We were however, hungry so we went to a 5dollar burger place after which we all got to drunk on a houseparty.

Sunday I went with Eva, Martina and Florian to Lynn Canyon. The hike was pretty cool, there was a suspension bridge covering 2 waterfalls and the walk was not to hard.
During the week, I worked a lot on my internship and filled my nights with drinking and sports. I basically can start my own project on mind wandering and have been busy reading, programming and finding excuses to go for coffee.

On thursday we went on a labretreet Mayne Island. I had such a great time there! It was good to get to know the people in the lab, in a different way then just at work. During the day we all did presentations about the work we're doing in the lab and during the night we cooked, played games (pooltable yay) and got drunk (and all was payed by the lab:). On Saturday we did a big hike to the top of the Island, the view was great but fog kinda blocked the view :O

The last week, togheter with some peeps (Martina, Eva, Millie Florian, Ehtan, Wouter Jan) we went for some mexican food in town, I played some volleybal as a sub and on Friday we had an amazing beerpong night. Everything was arranged super offically (ish) and everyone tried their hardest for the price (40 dollar worth of booze money), unfortunattaly we didnt win, Florian and Martin beat the hell out of us (We will be back!). On Saturday we (Florian, Martin, WouterJan) again went on an HH (Hangover Hike) and this time, we got really challenged. The hike went to the top of Lynn CAnyon (about 975m high) which meant we were sweating for 2,5h, to get amazed by the beautiful view, and then had to walk for 2,5h back. OMG. The challenged continued in the evening: Pub crawl, togeter with another 100 exchange students we went to 3 different bars, one filled with a metal band, the other one with some nice booty shaking music and the third one full with rich people. We all danced like there was no tomorrow.
But there was.
and it was painfull
After missing the oh so lengendary superbowl (the team of Seattle played, I should actually have watched it) the exchange student club organized a international quiz. Again I didnt win (and winning is as you probably know, the most important thing in a game).
This week, I went together with Millie and Martina to the movies, on thuesdays, this is only 7,50. We saw the movie Wild which was a pretty cool movie (you should all go!).
My internship is kinda stressfull at the moment, I have to program the whole task by myself (Matlab), and with little to no experience, and the postdoc who could help me just leaving for 3 weeks, this is now how they would call it " a big learning experience".
But i will probably know the real understanding of that quote once I have the code working! In the meanwhile, I can look forward to the weekend, we're hired a car + hostels and gonna drive to Tofino (Van Island) and enjoy some beatufill nature there!

Cheers, hugs and kissessss
